This posting is for an Engineering Manager position in the Collins Cedar Rapids, IA office. Reporting to the Rotary Wing Platform Systems department manager, this position is responsible for the overall technical and administrative management of the Rotary Wing Maritime, Cargo, & Civil Systems engineering team. This team consists of about 15 systems architects, engineers, and technical project managers. The team is responsible for full lifecycle systems engineering and is the face of the engineering team to both the end customer and Collins’ Program Management office, and business development.
A significant portion of the responsibilities for this position include pursuit and execution of various government avionics programs. Therefore, it is required that candidates for this position have proven execution experience pursuing and leading large complex and/or advanced technology projects, and systems engineering experience in a lead role on complex avionics programs.
This position offers an opportunity to guide all phases of the systems design and development process, from initial program pursuit through the design, development, integration, and test phases. Lead responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, providing oversight and guidance for systems specific tasks which consist of requirements analysis & trade studies, architecture definition, functional allocation, test and integration, engineering documentation, and other systems engineering-related activities.
In addition to technical activities, responsibilities also include resource allocation and overall administrative management of the team. This position demands an ability and willingness to perform day-to-day employee engagement, coaching and mentoring, and employee development. The role also requires employee performance excellence, including providing continuous feedback and performance correction, engagement check-ins, and administering formal performance management processes. Responsibilities also include employee onboarding, training, and career development.
This leader should be highly motivated, flexible, and have a passion to win in a fast-paced engineering environment across a matrixed organization. This leader must embody the GS Operating norms and is responsible for fostering an open team atmosphere where systems engineering, subsystems engineering, and program management work cooperatively and effectively as one team. Candidates must also ensure engineering and program management are aligned in technical and staffing expectations in order to ensure pursuits are captured and programs can be successfully executed.
Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, as well as customers. As such, the applicant must have both strong interpersonal skills and a strong, broad-based technical competency.
Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline and eight years of related experience.
Candidates must possess an active security clearance or be eligible to obtain one.
US Citizenship is required
Ability to travel domestically as needed
Proven execution experience leading large complex projects, agile development experience is preferred but not required
Systems engineering experience in a lead role on complex avionics programs
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 8 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 5 years of relevant experience. In the absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required.
